Make it Your New Year’s Resolution to Quit Smoking
It’s that time of year again. As we approach the New Year, we usually begin to think about making some changes in our lives. New Year’s resolutions give us the opportunity to get a fresh start on living a healthy and productive life.
Perhap the most important resolution is one that can add years to your life. If you want a resolution that tackles both a health problem and a money saving opportunity, consider trying to quit smoking. Not only can this big step towards better health that can also save you money, but knowing you’ve tackled your cravings and won will boost your self esteem as well.
Preparation is key to quit smoking success.
- Set an actual date on which you plan to quit.
- Tell those close to you know about when you intend to quit smoking.
- Remove all ashtrays and cigarette related things from the spaces you frequent, before you quit smoking.
- Stock up on low sugar snacks and beverages, however, drinking plenty of water is always a great way to help you through the cravings.
- Start to change your smoking habits before your quit day. For example, stop smoking at the computer or in your car. If you can change just one habit, you know that can change others.
What to do once your quit day arrives.
- Keep busy. Remember, idle hands reach for cigarettes.
- Try to go places where you can’t smoke like movie theaters, libraries, or fitness centers.
- Chew sugar-free gum but avoid snacking constantly. Try not to replace one bad habit with another one.
- Maintain a positive attitude and focus on the benefits of quitting smoking.
- Remind yourself that the cravings you experience are just temporary, but the benefits will last not only you, but your loved ones the rest of your life.
The first few days of not smoking are the hardest. Make sure that you try to do something that you enjoy during this time.
In tough economic times, quitting smoking makes a lot of sense.
The health reasons to quit smoking are abundant, from heart and lung health to just warding off the common cold more often, but what about the cost? When you consider within twenty four hours of quitting, your risk for heart attack drops fifty percent, that’s one big health benefit, but did you also know that if you’re a pack a day smoker- the money you spend over a 30 year habit could buy you a Porsche? That’s to say nothing of the health care and sick leave costs thrown in as well.
There are so many reasons to quit smoking, reminding yourself of the benefits each day will help you on your way to a healthier, happier life in 2009.
